ENERGY SAFETY GROUP TO SUPPLY HYDROGEN CONCENTRATION MONITORING SYSTEM FOR ARMENIAN NPP UNIT 2

ENERGY SAFETY GROUP TO SUPPLY HYDROGEN CONCENTRATION MONITORING SYSTEM FOR ARMENIAN NPP UNIT 2

ENERGY SAFETY GROUP TO SUPPLY HYDROGEN CONCENTRATION MONITORING SYSTEM FOR ARMENIAN NPP UNIT 2

Energy Safety Group’s cooperation with the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant began with one of the company’s largest international projects — the development of an alternative emergency power supply solution for the plant. Funded by the European Union as part of the NPP safety improvement programme following the post-Fukushima stress tests, the project was implemented by Energy Safety Group in partnership with the Ukrainian company Dalgakiran Compressor Ukraine. Six mobile diesel generator units of different capacities were designed, manufactured, delivered and commissioned for the Armenian NPP to provide backup power in the event of a station blackout.

Today, this cooperation continues with a new project in the field of severe accident management. Energy Safety Group has won the tender and been awarded a contract for the supply of a hydrogen concentration monitoring system for the confinement of Unit 2 of the Armenian NPP. The new project is funded by the European Union and managed by the European Commission, Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA), on behalf of and for the account of the Republic of Armenia and the Armenian NPP.

The project forms part of the measures aimed at enhancing the long-term safety of the Armenian NPP identified following the post-Fukushima stress tests. The implementation of the hydrogen concentration monitoring system is intended to help prevent confinement failure under severe accident conditions and provide plant operators with the data required for effective severe accident management.

The system will consist of two fully independent safety trains equipped with specialised transducers integrating the measurement of hydrogen concentration, oxygen concentration and temperature in a compact casing. Data will be collected and processed independently from other plant systems, ensuring that operators have access to the information required for severe accident management even in the event of a total station blackout.

The scope of the contract covers the full project cycle:

  • Documentation development
  • Equipment manufacturing and factory acceptance testing
  • Equipment delivery
  • Personnel training
  • Supervision of installation and commissioning
  • Supervision of site acceptance testing
  • Warranty provisions

The project will be implemented in close cooperation with the system manufacturer, SPC “Information and Technologies” (INIT), a Ukrainian engineering enterprise specialising in high-reliability instrumentation, safety-critical control systems and in-core monitoring solutions for nuclear power plants and energy infrastructure.

The new contract continues Energy Safety Group’s work at the Armenian NPP and expands the company’s portfolio of international projects focused on nuclear safety and severe accident preparedness. The previous emergency power supply project and the new hydrogen concentration monitoring system address different elements of a common objective — providing plant personnel with the technical capabilities and information required for effective response under severe accident conditions.
