ES Group together with the SSTC NRS will conduct an expert review for power unit 5 of the Kozloduy NPP as part of Westinghouse fuel licensing
The tender for the expert review of the safety analysis report (SAR) on compatibility of the In-core Monitoring System (ICMS) of the Kozloduy NPP Unit 5 was won by the consortium, which included Ukrainian and Czech enterprises of Energy Safety Group together with the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine (SSTCS NRS). This work is carried out as part of the licensing of the Westinghouse nuclear fuel at power unit 5 of the Kozloduy NPP.
While considering the tender proposals, focus was made on evaluation of the participants in terms of their proposed holistic approach, methodology and setup of expert review, as well as on the specific approaches and methods applied in the analysis of particular reports.
In the course of the technical expert review, the consortium will have the task to analyze the adequacy of justifications for the ICMS system and its readiness to accept the new type of fuel. The objectives of the review will be as follows:
- analyze the compliance of documents with the requirements of national norms and standards, as well as the requirements of international organizations;
- analyze the compliance of technical characteristics of the upgraded ICMS equipment with the requirements of regulatory and operational documents;
- assess the sufficiency and reliability of the information obtained by the upgraded ICMS aiming at nuclear and radiation safety for operation of power units with VVER-1000 reactors;
- evaluate the materials justifying the use of the ICMS software.
To remind, according to the results of audit held in March of this year, ES Group was qualified as a provider of services to Westinghouse in the joint projects for Ukrainian NPPs with VVER-440 and VVER-1000 reactors including analytical justification services for Westinghouse fuel.
It should be noted that the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety conducts all state expert reviews of the safety assessment documents relevant to introduction and operation Westinghouse fuel at power units of Ukrainian NPPs. The SSTC NRS participates in the European project APIS, which is implemented with the financial support of the European Commission and aimed at safe supply of the Westinghouse fuel for VVER-type reactors. The goal of the project is to unify the approach for introducing the fuel in the EU countries and Ukraine in accordance with the highest nuclear safety standards.
